New Delhi: Allegations are flying left, right and centre in the alleged forcible conversion case involving a national level woman shooter in Jharkhand. Tara Sahdev had accused her husband Ranjit Kohli alias Raqibul Hasan of marrying her on a fake identity and then forcing her to convert to Islam.
Kohli, who was arrested in Delhi on Tuesday and sent to three-day transit remand on Wednesday, denied the charges and claimed he was a Sikh. "I am from a Sikh family. My name is Ranjit Singh Kohli. Tara is lying," he said.
He, however, confessed to hitting Tara after a tiff she had with his mother, who too has been sent to three-day transit remand.
Kohli reportedly told the police that he married Tara in July this year and the argument between his mother and Tara happened in August, following which she levelled allegations of forcible conversion against him.
Sources say that Kohli confessed to the police that he was a Sikh by birth but had converted to Islam in 2007. His mother, who was a Muslim before marriage, had converted to Hinduism afterwards. Upon her husband's death, she re-converted to Islam.
Sources also said that Kohli knew several prominent people in Ranchi and a card sent to his house by a minister even addressed him as Raqibul.
Tara, meanwhile, is demanding a CBI enquiry into the incident.
Tara's accusations against Kohli had led to massive protests by Hindu outfits in Ranchi. The Home Ministry sought a report from the Jharkhand government over the matter.
The action now shifts to Ranchi. Within 72 hours, Kohli will have to be produced before a court. The Ranchi Police is likely to seek his further remand.
