THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Garbage is an international problem and every country is in search of better waste management mechanisms. Sreekrishna, a Malayali based in Bangalore, believes that’s probably why his co-founded firm has made it to the list of the top 50 promising startups across the world in the Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) 2011 being held in the US from November 14 to 20.Sreekrishna and his partners, Mainak Chakraborthy, based in Bangalore and Julien Goupit, a French national, are behind the firm Green Power Systems (GPS), which has come up with a sleek, portable model of a bio-gas plant which would fit right into a car parking area. The plant which runs on RMS (Remote Management System) keeps track of its required hygiene factors and raises alarm for pre-emptive action. The threesome has crossed the first phase of selection to GEW and is waiting for the results in the second phase which would be out in a month. GEW-2011 has the participation of 121 countries this time, every country running its own campaigns that match their people and entrepreneurship climate. The US Department of State, Inter-American Development Bank and Kauffman Foundation are partners in the event. The expert panel of GEW scrutinises the entries to select the top 50.“All across India, and from the response we are getting even from abroad, waste is a serious headache. Our aim was to ‘productise’ the bio-gas plant, based on the dry thermophilic technology. It’s not a bulky civil construction, but portable and would usurp the space of one car. Which means one tenth of a standard plant,’’ Sreekrishna says.A native of Thiruvananthapuram, Sreekrishna is a pass-out from CET (College of Engineering Trivandrum), who later joined the IIM (Indian Institute of Management), Bangalore. He teamed up with Mainak and Julien to zero in on an efficient method to dispose of plastic but later realised organic waste is a much bigger enemy in big cities. They came up with GPS in 2010 and launched the portable bio-waste plant soon after.
