BANGALORE: Bangaloreans are gearing up to sight the last lunar eclipse of the year that can be seen on the Saturday night sky. The frosty winter night will give all astronomy lovers a unique opportunity to witness the total eclipse that is scheduled to partially begin at 5.3 pm and will continue until 11 pm on Saturday. Scientific officer with Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium Dr B S Shylaja told City Express that the Planetarium has arranged for several telescopes through which the lunar eclipse can be observed. Apart from that shows such as an educational video on the moon will be screened at the Planetarium. “Two students will explain the concept of the eclipse and the concepts of the shadow to all visitors who drop here in the evening. They will demonstrate on a model,” she said. The eclipse is visible from all over the country and the total duration of the eclipse is calculated to be nearly six hours. But, she explains, “ When the partial eclipse begins in the evening, it cannot be identified by the naked eye. The partial eclipse is when the moon passes through the outer shadow called the penumbra. During this time,  the moon only experiences a slight change in colour.  The total eclipse is when the moon passes through the core shadow called the Umbra, when the moon will be gradually be invisible or vanishes from the sight of naked eye.” She clarified that there are no records associated with the eclipse in comparison to the July 2011 lunar eclipse, which was considered the longest. However, several myths are associated with the lunar eclipse and elders generally refrain family members from stepping out during the eclipse.
