CHENNAI: A 12-year-old boy, who was playing with his friends in the Cooum river, was swept away by the waters at Saidapet on Saturday. Rescue workers are making efforts to retrieve his body.Sources said victim R Santhosh (12) was a resident of Jyoti Ammal Nagar and studied in Class VI in the local corporation school. He and five of his friends were fishing and playing in the Cooum near Maraimalai Adigal Bridge, Saidapet, when he was swept away by the rapidly flowing stream around 11 am.Fire and rescue service teams, led by Mylapore station officer K Selvaraj, launched a search. “We went as far as the Adyar Boat Club in rubber boats, but could not find the boy’s body,” Selvaraj said. “The search will continue tomorrow.”In another incident, a 20-year-old engineering student, who drowned in the sea off the Marina Beach, washed ashore on Sunday. Nandakumar of Thiruvottiyur, who was a participant in a dance show in a private Tamil television channel, came along with his friends to the beach on Kamarajar Salai on Saturday. While they were taking a dip in the waters, the waves swept them away. On hearing their cries, the local fishermen managed to save all, but Nandakumar. The youth’s body, which washed ashore on Sunday morning, was sent to the government hospital in Royapettah for post-mortem.
