How to Cook Bagel Bites
Ore-Ida’s Bagel Bites are a favorite snack of teens and pizza lovers of all ages. They are quick and easy to make in a conventional oven, toaster oven, or microwave, so long as you follow the instructions on the package (or at http://www.bagelbites.com/en/About-Us/Cooking-Instructions). Or, if you prefer, you can try your hand at making your own version of mini bagel pizzas—it’s simple and tasty!

Baking Them in the Oven

Preheat the oven to 425 °F (218 °C). Allow the oven to reach the set temperature while you open the package and arrange the Bagel Bites on a baking sheet. If you’re a kid with limited experience using an oven, ask an adult for assistance.

Place the Bagel Bites 0.5 in (1.3 cm) apart on a baking sheet. You don’t have to be precise with the spacing, but keeping the Bagel Bites separated will help them to cook evenly. You don’t need to oil the pan or use cooking spray. You can also use a baking dish with shallow sides.

Insert the tray into the oven on an upper middle rack. If the oven rack is set too low, the bottoms of the Bagel Bites may burn before the tops are browned. The reverse may happen if the oven rack is set too high. Put on oven mitts and use caution when putting the tray into the oven. Kids should have adult assistance or supervision.

Set the baking time based on the variety and number of Bagel Bites. There are 10 varieties of Bagel Bites, and the baking times can vary slightly. The baking time is also longer when you cook more Bagel Bites at once. These baking times are from the Bagel Bites website: Bacon, Egg, and Cheese; Sausage, Egg, and Cheese; Bacon, Sausage, and Cheese; or Bacon and Cheese: 12 minutes for 4 pieces; 14 minutes for 9 pieces. Cheese and Pepperoni; Cheese, Sausage, and Pepperoni: 12 minutes for 4 pieces; 14 minutes for 9 or 12 pieces; 16 minutes for 20 pieces. Three Cheese: 12 minutes for 4 or 9 pieces; 14 minutes for 12 or 20 pieces. Mozzarella: 14 minutes for 12 or 24 pieces. Supreme: 14 minutes for 9 pieces (there are 9 pieces in a box) Buffalo Chicken Style: 12 minutes for 4 or 9 pieces (9 pieces per box)

Remove the Bagel Bites and allow them to cool for 1 minute. Use your oven mitts and carefully take the hot tray out of the oven. Don’t touch the Bagel Bites for at least 1 minute—they’re very hot! After that, dig in!

Using a Toaster Oven for Bagel Bites

Place Bagel Bites on a tray while the toaster oven heats to 400 °F (204 °C). Although your toaster oven’s included baking tray is probably pretty small, spread out the Bagel Bites as much as possible for even browning—0.5 in (1.3 cm) is ideal. Inexperienced children should not use a toaster oven without supervision.

Bake them for the time listed on the package or Bagel Bites website. The baking time will vary a little based on the variety of Bagel Bites and the number you’re cooking. Use the following guidelines: Bacon, Egg, and Cheese; Sausage, Egg, and Cheese; Bacon, Sausage, and Cheese; or Bacon and Cheese: 13 minutes for 4 pieces; 16 minutes for 9 pieces. Cheese and Pepperoni; Cheese, Sausage, and Pepperoni: 12 minutes for 4 pieces; 16 minutes for 9 pieces; 18 minutes for 12 pieces. Three Cheese: 12 minutes for 4 pieces; 14 minutes for 9 pieces; 16 minutes for 12 pieces. Mozzarella: 12 minutes for 4 pieces; 16 minutes for 12 pieces. Supreme: 16 minutes for 9 pieces (there are 9 pieces in a box) Buffalo Chicken Style: 12 minutes for 4 pieces; 14 minutes for 9 pieces (9 pieces per box)

Let them cool for 1 minute after pulling the tray from the toaster oven. They’ll burn your fingers and your mouth, so hands off! After waiting for at least a minute, though, you can eat your fill of toasty Bagel Bites. The tray and the interior of the toaster oven will be very hot. Use caution and put on oven mitts. Kids should be supervised.

Microwaving Them for a Quick Fix

Unpackage the crisping tray and place it shiny side up. All Bagel Bites packages have a crisping tray for use only with microwave cooking. Remove the plastic from it and place it on your microwave tray (or a microwave-safe plate) with the shiny side facing up. The crisping tray keeps the bottom of the Bagel Bites from getting soggy in the microwave. It is not recommended to microwave them without one. Kids can learn to use a microwave pretty quickly, but they should be supervised until they are very comfortable using it.

Arrange the Bagel Bites on the shiny side of the crisping tray. Leave a bit of space around each individual Bagel Bite—0.5 in (1.3 cm) if you can. This will help them cook through and crisp up.

Cook them on High for the recommended time. Most microwaves automatically cook on High power unless adjusted otherwise. The 10 different varieties of Bagel Bites have different microwaving times, and the times vary a bit based on how many Bagel Bites you’re making. Use the times listed on the package, or the following from the Bagel Bites website: Bacon, Egg, and Cheese; Sausage, Egg, and Cheese; Bacon, Sausage, and Cheese; or Bacon and Cheese: 1 min 15 sec for 4 pieces; 2 min 30 sec for 9 pieces. Cheese and Pepperoni; Cheese, Sausage, and Pepperoni: 55 seconds for 4 pieces; 2 min 30 sec for 9 pieces; 3 minutes for 12 pieces. Three Cheese: 55 seconds for 4 pieces; 2 min 10 sec for 9 pieces; 2 min 15 sec for 12 pieces. Mozzarella: 55 seconds for 4 pieces; 3 minutes for 12 pieces. Supreme: 2 min 20 sec for 9 pieces (there are 9 pieces in a box) Buffalo Chicken Style: 1 minute for 4 pieces (9 pieces per box)

Cool them in the microwave for 1 minute before removing them. After at least 1 minute has passed, put on an oven mitt and remove the crisping tray from the microwave. The Bagel Bites should be ready to eat!

Making Homemade “Bagel Bites”

Gather your ingredients. Making homemade mini bagel pizzas—basically your own version of Bagel Bites—requires only a few simple ingredients. These include: 16 mini bagels, sliced in half 12 oz (340 g) shredded mozzarella cheese 16 fl oz (470 mL) pizza sauce 6 oz (170 g) pepperoni, sliced into 0.25 in (0.64 cm) cubes. substitute or add other cheese, meat, or veggie toppings as desired

Preheat the oven and slice the mini bagels in half. Turn the oven to 450 °F (232 °C). In the meantime, carefully slice each mini bagel in half. Kids should have an adult to help when slicing bagels. This recipe makes 32 mini bagel pizzas in 2 batches of 16.

Bake 16 sliced mini bagels on a parchment-lined baking sheet for 5 minutes. You’re looking for the tops of the bagels to just barely begin to brown. If this happens before 5 minutes, remove the bagels from the oven at that time. The parchment paper is optional, but it helps prevent sticking and keeps the cheese you’ll be adding from burning onto your baking sheet.

Add sauce, cheese, and pepperoni to your mini bagels. Add approximately 0.5 fl oz (15 mL) of sauce, 0.33 oz (9.4 g) of cheese, and 0.16 oz (4.5 g) of diced pepperoni to each bagel. Adjust the amounts to suit your tastes, or make substitutions or additions. You could add a mix of diced green peppers and mushrooms instead of the pepperoni, for example.

Return the mini bagels to the oven for 10-16 minutes. Check the bagels regularly after about 8 minutes and remove them from the oven as soon as the cheese is browned and bubbly to your liking. Let them cool for at least 1 minute, then enjoy! Prepare the second batch of 16 bagels while the first batch is baking, then put them in the oven after you pull out the first batch. Always use oven mitts when putting trays in or taking trays out of an oven and supervise children when baking.
