A total of 40 candidates have been selected for the post of Assistant Geophysicist. Among them, Manas Mahata of Jhargram district in West Bengal is garnering the headlines after passing the exam without the help of coaching. He secured AIR 14 in the exam. Relying on his beliefs that there can be no substitute for books, 31-year-old Manas Mahata did not take help from any educational institutions to secure a rank in the exam.

Manas Mahata originally hails from Chandabila village in the Jhargram district of West Bengal. As per media reports, his father worked as a food Inspector in the food department, while his mother Gandeshwari Mahata is a housewife. His father, Chunaram Mahata has three sons, out of which Manas is the youngest. The elder son works in the power department, while the younger son teaches in the high school. Manas Mahata reportedly passed his high school from SC High School in Chandabila in 2008. He passed Class 12 from Banitirtha High School, Jhargram and got admitted to Jhargram Raj College in Physics.

After graduating in 2013, he received admission to MSc at Kharagpur IIT. After this, he cleared the CSIR NET exam in 2015. Initially deciding to pursue his education in the research field, Manas Mahata changed his mind and went back to his native village in 2019. He started preparing for government jobs.

While talking about the post of Assistant Geophysicist in the Geological Survey Of India, Manas said, “I did not read any geophysics paper in MSc. But I liked the subject so I bought new books and started studying for job exams.” After passing the written exam, he went for an interview on February 7. After achieving success in UPSC, Manas Mahata shared his success mantra for the exam and said that he has a habit of reading a lot of books. He said, “Reading those books and mastering the subject brought me success. There is no substitute for books.” He claims that he didn’t get the Geoscientist position because of two numbers.
