All You Need To Know About The Agnipath Scheme
After four years, 25 per cent of Agniveers are permanently recruited in the Indian Army.

The Agnipath scheme, announced on June 14, 2022, was rolled out to recruit youth in the armed forces between the age of 17-and-a-half and 21 years for four years. The scheme has been a serious bone of contention in recent times with the Leader of the Opposition and Congress Member of Parliament (MP), Rahul Gandhi launching a scathing attack on the government on this issue yesterday. Responding to it, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh countered Rahul’s claims by stating that the government offers an amount of Rs 1 crore to the family of Agniveers who are martyred during duty.

Here is all you need to know about the much-discussed Agnipath scheme.

The Agnipath scheme provides induction of the Agniveers into the Indian Army, Air Force and Navy for four years of service, including the training period. After four years, 25 per cent of Agniveers are permanently recruited in the Indian Army.

How much salary do Agniveers get?

Agniveers are stipulated to earn a package of about Rs 4.76 lakhs in the first year. It goes up to around 6.92 lakhs in the fourth year. Every Agniveer has to contribute 30 per cent of his monthly salary to the service fund. The same amount is contributed by the government as well.

Agniveers will have 30 per cent of their salary deducted as Seva Nidhi. This means that if an Agniveer earns Rs 30,000 he will obtain Rs 21,900 of the salary. In the next year, he will receive an amount of Rs 23,100 in hand and Rs 25,550 in the third year. The in-hand amount will turn out to be Rs 28,000 in the fourth year.

First-year – Rs 30,000/ per month

Second year – Rs 33,000/- per month

Third year – Rs 36,500/- per month

Fourth year – Rs 40,000/- per month

Agniveers have a non-contributory life insurance cover which amounts to Rs 48 lakhs. Along with these, an additional ex gratia amount of Rs 44 lakhs is dispensed in case of death during an Agniveer’s service. The family of the Agniveer will also receive the amount deposited as a service fund in such a scenario.

The family of an Agniveer will be paid the salary for the remainder of his duty, in addition to the insurance money, if he faces an injury during his four-year duty period.

– Insurance- Rs 48 lakhs

– Army Women Welfare Association- Rs 30,000

– For funeral – Rs 9,000

, – Army Central Welfare Fund – Rs 8 lakhs

– Ex-gratia- Rs 44 lakhs

Several states have already announced financial assistance for the families of the martyred Agniveers. Moreover, an Agniveer is eligible to get compensation if he faces any kind of disability during service. The compensation will be calculated based on a percentage of the disability determined by the medical authorities.
