Team India are all set to face England in the semifinal of the 2024 edition of the ICC T20 World Cup in Guyana on Thursday and Indian skipper Rohit Sharma expressed that the men in blue intend not to overthink things during the knockout phase of the tournament.
“We want to treat this as a normal game. We don’t want to be talking about that it is a semifinal. We are enjoying each other’s company and we need to carry on. It is a knockout game. If you think too much it doesn’t help,” Rohit said at the presser ahead of the final-four game against the defending champions at the Providence Stadium.
India are on an ICC trophy drought of over a decade now and there have been suggestions that the men in blue have been let down by a combination of hard luck and overthinking the occasion on the big stage.
While he acknowledged the work of both to an extent, Rohit opined that there has not been a lot of alteration with regards to approach over the past couple of years and that clarity of role and mind play a huge part in success, especially when under pressure.
“Honestly not a lot has changed since 2022. We have tried to play with a free mind, T20 and ODIs as well. It all depends on conditions which were challenging throughout the tournament here,” said Rohit.
“We want to be a smart cricket team. I have kept things simple personally and for the players as well. We have done well with role clarity and rely on the players making good decisions on the field,” the captain said.
“Everyone knows they need to get the job done. We don’t need to change from 2022 to 2024,” he elaborated.
He opined that staying calm has benefited him, but he is happy to let players find their own zones as long as they serve the cause of the national outfit.
“It is important to stay cool and calm. Staying calm has worked for me over the years. Sometimes you can lose your cool as well. I am happy to let you do what you want but if is at cost of the team then I won’t let it happen,” Rohit asserted.
“The Indian cricket team is always under pressure. Most of the guys are used to it,” he added.
India have four spinners in their squad in the Caribbean and when quizzed if the men in blue would opt for the services of their turners extensively, he said, “We will see the conditions and then take a call on four spinners. We will see.”
