IPL 2024: Punjab Kings Clinch Battle of Lions Against Chennai Super Kings by 7 Wickets
PBKS restricted CSK to 161 runs before chasing down the target with 7 wickets and 13 deliveries; resgistering their 5th consecutive win at the Chepauk.

Punjab Kings registered yet another win on the road at the MA Chidambaram Stadium against defending champions Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday in the Indian Premier League (IPL) match no. 49.

The visitors limited Chennai to 161 for 7 as PBKS spinners starred with the ball, before chasing down the target with 7 wickets and 13 balls to spare; thanks to contributions from Englishman Jonny Bairstow and South African batter Rilee Rossouw.

CSK were put to bat by PBKS stand-in skipper Sam Curran as the hosts’ nascent opening pair of captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ajinkya Rahane yielded results for the first time in the ongoing campaign as the pair put up a 64-run stand for the first wicket before the veteran batter was dismissed for 29 off 24 deliveries by Harpreet Brar in the ninth over of the game.

Shivam Dube, who has been handed an India call-up for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, did not last long at the crease as he was caught in front of the wicket by the Punjab spinner to head back to the dugout for a golden duck.

Chennai lost their third wicket in quick succession as star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja went cheaply for just a couple of runs as he fell prey to Rahul Chahar’s turner. The batting order reshuffle continued from the hosts’ dugout as Samir Rizvi was brought in as an impact substitute for the dismissed Rahane.

The fresh wicket turned out to be slow as the spinners choked the flow of runs in the middle overs after Chennai’s promising start to the game, but skipper Gaikwad and Rizvi prolonged the testing stay in the middle. Chennai’s boundary drought of over thirty-six balls came to an end as Harshal Patel’s wide delivery beat Jitesh Sharma behind the wicket and ran away for four.

Gaikwad’s purple patch at Chepauk continued as he brought up his fourth consecutive fifty at the Den to massive reception before Rizvi was scalped by Kagiso Rabada for 21 off 23 deliveries. Moeen Ali took his fallen teammate’s position at the crease and was privy to the boisterous ovation as poster boy MS Dhoni walked in to bat the final couple of overs of the game after Gaikwad was scalped by quick Arshadeep Singh.

Englishman Ali couldn’t put a dent in the Punjabi rein-in as Chahar castled the southpaw for his second scalp of the day. Daryl Mitchell walked in at six down. The Kiwi, who made a brilliant half-century last game, couldn’t impact the game but Dhoni delighted the crowd with a boundary in the final over as Chennai finished with a total of 162 before the fan favourite was caught short of the crease in the final delivery of the home innings.

Jonny Bairstow and Prabhsimran Singh opened the chase for the tourists but CSK got an early breakthrough as the latter fell to debutant Richard Gleeson, caught by skipper Gaikwad. Bairstow and Protea batter Rilee Rossouw put up a fifty-run stand before the Englishman was scalped four short of his fifty by Shivam Dube, caught behind by Dhoni.

The South African helped Punjab chomp down on the target as he helped take his side into the triple figures in the 12th over. The 30-run stand for the third wicket between Shashank Singh and Rossouw was broken by Shardul Thakur who castled the Protea batter after he had managed 43 runs off just 23 deliveries.

Sam Curran and Shashank brought the equation down to less than run a ball required with 38 deliveries still to bowl. The batting pair remained unbeaten and went on to negotiate the fixture well there on out with caution to put the finishing touches on the successful run chase as Curran finished with 26 runs, while Shashank concluded with 25 runs off his willow.
