MS Dhoni will not be leading Chennai Super Kings during IPL 2024 with the franchise announcing the legendary captain has handed over the reins to Ruturaj Gaikwad for the upcoming season.
The development thus brings an end to Dhoni’s highly successful rein as CSK captain with the IPL 2023 final against Gujarat becoming his final as the franchise’s captain.
Irfan Pathan paid rich tributes to Dhoni with whom he played for India and in IPL for CSK.
“In the ever-expanding galaxy of cricket, MS Dhoni’s legacy as CSK’s leader shines bright, akin to a supernova, illuminating the path for the franchise with unparalleled brilliance and allure. His leadership will be remembered for decades to come. Good luck Ruturaj for your new responsibility as a CSK leader,” Pathan posted on X (formerly Twitter).

This is the second time that Dhoni has stepped down from the role after IPL 2022 when CSK named allrounder Ravindra Jadeja as their captain. However, that was short-lived move as Jadeja, after a series of poor results, quit captaincy with Dhoni returning to the role.

Besides five IPL titles, Dhoni also led CSK to two Champions League T20 triumphs. In all, Dhoni led two IPL franchises – CSK and the now defunct Rising Pune Supergiant.
In the 226 IPL matches that Dhoni was captain, he oversaw 133 victories, 91 defeats with two ending in no results. His winning percentage of 59.37 is the best among those who have been captain in at least 100 IPL matches.
CSK will begin their quest for a sixth IPL trophy when they lock horns with fellow title hopefuls Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday. In their next match of the season, the title holders will then host last year’s runners-up Gujarat Titans (March 26).
The Yellow brigade will then fly down to Vizag to take on Delhi Capitals (March 31) before heading to Hyderabad to take on Sunrisers Hyderabad (April 5).
