This sports drama directed by Pa Ranjith revolves around the barbaric rivalry between two North Chennai clans. The story takes us back to the 1970s when a young man named Kablian is offered the opportunity to revive his career in boxing and lead his clan to victory. But with his concerned mother disapproving of the competition and the complex politics at play, it is up to Kablian now to rise above the challenges posed his way. Arya received the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for the film.
Madrasapattinam – 2010
Madrasapattinam is a must-watch movie. Helmed by AL Vijay, this historical drama is set against the backdrop of the 1940s, before India gained independence. It is the love story between the daughter of an English governor and a villager. Although the two elope, they are eventually caught by the English guards, but years later, the woman comes looking for her lost love. Amy Jackson plays the female lead in the film.
Naan Kadavul – 2009
Arya plays the tough role of an Aghori or a hardcore worshipper of Lord Shiva in Naan Kadavul. This Bala directorial shows the life story of Rudra who is abandoned by his father at birth. Years later, however, his family came looking for him and took him back to the city. But living as an Aghori for many years, Rudra finds it difficult to adjust to modern city life. Rudra was honoured with Filmfare and Vijay Awards in the Best Actor category for this film.
Raja Rani – 2013
Raja Rani is helmed by Jawan director Atlee. Although it is a simple love story the beautiful storytelling is what sets the film apart from the rest. Starring Arya and Nayanthara in the lead, Raja Rani centers around a boy named John and a girl named Regina who despite not being fond of each other, get married to each other. What starts as a hate relationship and troubled marriage soon blossoms into an undying love.
Arindhum Ariyamalum – 2005
Although Arindhum Ariyamalum was Arya’s debut film, he won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut for this Vishnuvardhan directorial. The crime action revolves around Sathya — a college boy who files a complaint against Adhinarayanan — a goon, unaware that he is Sathya’s father. Arya plays the role of Kutti, Adhinarayanan’s adopted son who also gets trapped in this drama.
