Mumbai: The Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai will have a complete new look by the year-end as the state government has put the Rs 5,200 crore airport upgradation work on priority.
The project undertaken by Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) has many plans for the airport to compete with the other international airports in the world.
It includes complete different set up, upgraded runways, 106 parking stands for the aircraft, 51 boarding bridges, 316 check in counters.
"The domestic and international airports are under modernisation process. The interior is getting renovated," secretary special projects Sanjay Ubale told PTI.
The airport modernisation plan will be carried out in two phases. The phase one includes upgradation of terminal 2A. Terminal 2B and 2C will be renovated under phase II.
"The part of the phase I is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year," Ubale added.
Currently, the international terminal receives 30 million passengers while the domestic receives 12 million passengers. This passengers traffic is expected to increase up to 40 million in next few years. MIAL is also concentrating on facilities required to meet the need of the increasing numbers of passengers.
Since Mumbai airport is situated in the area of 2,000 acre, encroachment has become main obstacle in the process of upgradation.
The project is facing resistance from slum dwellers and the rehabilitation issue went to the court. But the Government has made their stand clear, Ubale told PTI.
"Unlike Delhi airport which is spread across 5,000 acre, space constraint is the biggest problem with Mumbai," said Ubale.
"We cannot do rehabilitation of the affected people at the same location. But certainly we are giving standard resettlement package," he added further.
He also said that people have been misguided on the issue.
