Read the incredible story of a Texas man who defied the odds and survived a life-threatening medical crisis after attempting to remove an ingrown hair

A US-based man from the state of Texas has defied the odds after surviving a harrowing medical ordeal triggered by an attempt to remove an ingrown hair. 36-year-old Steven Spinale’s arduous journey began when he slipped into a medically induced coma, a consequence of complications from the procedure.

Spinale’s sister, Michelle, chronicled his battle since late 2022, UK’s Daily Mail reported. Doctors initially struggled to diagnose his condition, which deteriorated rapidly, leading to life support. Spinale contracted a rare bacterial infection, resulting in severe sepsis and organ failure. “All [doctors] could figure out was he was bleeding internally from somewhere. Little did we know that would be the smallest worry,” Spinale’s sister wrote on a GoFundMe page that has raised more than $8,000 for his care.

Amid this crisis, he also battled influenza A, double pneumonia, and acute respiratory distress syndrome. Despite grim prognoses, Spinale endured a three-week coma, followed by open-heart surgery and intensive care measures. Michelle’s social media posts showed the family’s unwavering hope in the face of adversity. Against the odds, Spinale defied medical expectations, gradually regaining strength and mobility by the end of 2023.

Throughout the ordeal, a GoFundMe campaign garnered support for Spinale. “Steven is so important to so many people and we need him to fight like he has never fought before. His wife hasn’t left his side so both incomes are now gone. We are trying to raise funds to help ease their worries and help pay their bills including medical. Steven doesn’t have insurance. This is going to be a long road if he pulls thru this and we appreciate all the help we can get,” the GoFundMe read.
