An Indian-origin construction company owner, Buta Singh Gill, and another man, whose identity was not immediately known, were shot dead at a construction site in the Cavanagh area of Canada’s Edmonton city on Monday.

A close friend of Gill’s said he was a prominent face of a Sikh temple trust in the city and had “strong ties to the Punjabi community”.

According to an India Today report, Gill owned Gill Built Homes Ltd., a luxury home building company based in Edmonton.

Confirming the daytime shooting incident, the Edmonton Police Service stated that there were no immediate concerns regarding public safety. They urged citizens to avoid the area near Cavanagh Blvd SW and 30 Avenue SW while the police conducted their investigation into a shooting that occurred around noon in a residential neighborhood.

The shooting also resulted in serious injuries to a 51-year-old man, who is currently hospitalised. According to a statement on X (formerly Twitter) shortly after the incident, responding officers have secured the scene, and EPS homicide investigators will oversee the investigation. No further details were provided at that time.

In a subsequent social media update, the police clarified that they were not seeking any suspects, although no additional information regarding the perpetrator was disclosed.

In the aftermath of the shooting, approximately 50 individuals, primarily from the South Asian home-builders community, congregated at the location.

Former city councillor Mohinder Banga, speaking at the scene, disclosed that the victim, identified as Gill whom he had known for many years, was fatally shot while checking on his workers at a construction site.

Banga highlighted Gill’s deep connections to the Punjabi community, describing him as a religious and altruistic individual who actively assisted others. He mentioned Gill’s active involvement in a Sikh temple on St Albert Trail and emphasised his readiness to aid anyone in need.

Banga expressed bewilderment over the senseless act of violence against someone widely known for his selfless nature and community contributions.

He further noted the solidarity of the Punjabi and East Indian communities, underscoring their desire to offer support and assistance during this challenging time. Banga said Gill was survived by his wife and two children.
