Sources close to Imran Khan have alleged widespread irregularities during the Pakistan elections, casting a shadow over the democratic process. They told CNN-News18 that the electoral playing field was anything but level and that the bat symbol associated with Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was taken away from the party.
Local media reports suggest that voters were subjected to intimidation and coercion. Concerns have been raised regarding the impartiality of the electoral process, with claims that the army has intervened to halt the counting of votes and shut down polling booths. The international community has expressed shock at these developments, with international media outlets and observers condemning the reported irregularities. Initially, PTI-backed independent candidates were reportedly leading in 90 seats. However, the situation took a dramatic turn with the military’s alleged intervention.
The General Headquarters (GHQ) has reportedly assumed direct control over the electoral process in South Punjab and Lahore, with General Asim Munir personally overseeing the handling of results. While results from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) and interior Sindh have been released, the situation remains tense as the military’s involvement raises questions about the integrity of the electoral outcome.
PTI-Backed Independent Candidates Leading
Earlier, initial results indicated a major setback for the PML-N, with PTI-backed independent candidates taking the lead. The victory for PTI-backed independents extends beyond the National Assembly, with strong performances reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) and Balochistan as well.
Unofficial reports suggest that PTI-backed candidates are leading in 90 seats, placing PML-N in second position with 45 seats. The outcome represents a notable blow for former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who reportedly vacated the Model Town office late into the night following the results. Subsequently, the military assumed control of all Returning Offices, reportedly initiating the preparation of Form 45. In the late hours, Pakistan’s Chief Election Commissioner also departed from his office before conducting a press conference.
Around 11:30 PM on Thursday, PPP’s Asif Ali Zardari arrived in Islamabad, adding further intrigue to the political landscape. Top sources indicate that in this proposed formula, the number of independent candidates will be reduced, facilitating the formation of a PML-N government with additional support, while PPP is slated to secure the presidency.
