Do you remember sometime back a trend went viral on social media, where people were sharing posts or reels and saying that if their favourite celebrity would comment, they would do something special? Many joined the bandwagon in hopes of getting a response from celebrities. Taking the reel a step ahead, a man posted a video to grab the eyeballs of brands. Sourabh Chowdhury, a public speaker and an MBA coach dropped a clip on Instagram, where he can be seen wearing a formal blazer suit and the in-text read, “If a brand comments on this reel, I will buy their products for a full year (It was a dare now I’m trapped).” His tricky caption read, “Guys keep me safe by not sharing, not commenting and not liking this reel! This was a dare given to me. Don’t let it reach any brands.”
Lo and behold! Brands pounced on the opportunity and dropped comments promoting their own companies. Ajio commented, “Itni shopping ke liye bag lena hai ya truck? (Do you want a bag or a truck for your shopping bags)” Skincare brand Just Herbs wrote, “Growth aap sambhal lo, glow up hum sambhal lenge (You take care of growth, we will take care of your glow up).” Meesho dropped a comment claiming, “Aap wishlist banao, sahi price sahi quality ka guarantee humaara (You make the wishlist, we will guarantee you the right price and quality).”
Apart from these, a few other renowned brands like beverage brand Sprite, snacks brand Bingo Tedhe Medhe, audio content platform Kuku FM, Max Life Insurance, fast food joint Wendys, loan and credit card platform Paisa Bazaar, non-profit organisation Pakistan Sweet Home, live streaming FanCode, oral care brand Perfora and food brand Master Chow commented on the post. The video has garnered 38.7 million views on Instagram.
Sourabh Chowdhury’s followers were surprised to see so many blue-tick verified brand accounts drop comments under the video. While a few grabbed the opportunity to point out a few brands to improve their services, others joked that the comment section looks more verified than “their existence”.
