We often daydream about things like becoming millionaires or billionaires overnight, leaving our jobs and going on a world tour. Something quite similar happened to a London couple, who woke up in the morning and were baffled to see millions of rupees, not just in the husband’s account, but also in the wife’s account. Their happiness knew no bounds after “hitting the jackpot” and they soon began to plan about how they would spend the money. Unfortunately, their excitement did not last long, making them billionaires only for a few hours.
Richard Warnock, a self-employed builder was shocked when he checked his account in the morning to find £8.3 million (Rs 87.41 crore approx) and in his wife, Jaqueline’s account, an amount of £2.5 million (Rs 26.32 crore approx). Both have an account with global investment company Abrndn and the couple used their accounts to invest in pensions, stocks and shares.
As per the reports in Mirror, the 56-year-old Richard Warnock expressed his happiness. “For a couple of hours there, I thought this might be real and we’d hit the jackpot! It was like winning the EuroMillions! My heart was racing when I saw the cash. We had already started thinking about how we would spend it.” He confessed that initially, he thought it must have been a mistake, but his wife’s portfolio was high too. The couple assumed that one of their investments may have done some wonders overnight and they might have genuinely received the amount.
Even though Richard questioned the money, after seeing the bank balance remain the same after a few hours he was convinced that they may have seriously hit the jackpot. He decided to encash the profit, so he contacted his financial adviser, Acova Wealth Management. The couple’s dreams shattered after they realised what had actually happened.
Reportedly, they were millionaires just for a few hours. It was found that the IT had made an error with the decimal placement on the stock which showed that their funds had soared. The couple were gutted as in high-risk investments, people often make aggressive investments and it did not seem impossible to get a huge return on their investment.
The value went back to £500,000 (Rs 5 crore approx) after the amendment was issued. The pricing error affected other clients as well. A spokesperson from Abrdn shared that there was a short-term error in the intra-day fund data feed that they received from a party on Wednesday, March 20.
