'Jerry Is Here, Bring Tom': Watch What Happens When English Is Not Your First Language
What makes the clip hilarious is that the woman’s request sounds earnest as she tries to make the person on the other end of the call understand her needs.

English is the second language in many parts of the world. So, naturally, for many, it can be challenging to learn and become proficient in the language. More often than not, people try to speak the language to the best of their knowledge, which may often lead to funny situations. Something similar happened with a woman in the viral video in which she can be seen talking in broken English with a man. What makes the clip hilarious is that the woman’s request sounds earnest as she tries to make the person on the other end of the call understand her needs.

A funny video has been doing the rounds of the internet in which the woman, Olga Yugay is dressed in a white bathrobe and is standing on top of a hotel bed as she makes a call to the receptionist. She uses a pre-recorded clip of a man lip-sync to the dialogue, but her point of view in the clip is to show what happens when English is not someone’s first language.

The now-viral Instagram post began with the in-text, “When English is not your first language”. The woman calls up the receptionist for help. The voice on the other end says, “Hello, how can I help you?” The woman responds (in a man’s voice), “Hello. Excuse me, um, actually my English is not good.” The receptionist said, “Okay.” The woman continued, “Umm but you know Tom and Jerry?” The voice said, “Yes, the cartoon.” She quips, “Yeah! Jerry is here in my room.” The man on the phone sounds confused and said, “ I am sorry?” The woman continued, “Jerry. Jerry is here in my room.” Finally upon understanding the client’s sentence, the man responds, “You have a mouse in the room?” Olga lip-syncs, “Please, um, come here and um when you come here, bring Tom with you.” The receptionist informed, “We don’t have a Tom in the hotel.” She said, “Okay. Come please.” and ends the call.

It is clearly understood that the person did not know the English term for a mouse and cat and instead called them Jerry and Tom respectively to convey their point across. The clip has been viewed 82.3 million times on Instagram. Olga’s caption read, “You have Jerry in the hotel but not Tom?” Of course, the clip left everyone in stitches. One user wrote, “I know it took the receptionist everything in him to not laugh.” Another commented, “‘We don’t have Tom in the hotel’ best customer service convo.” One more wrote, “Imagine the situation of that staff.”
