A University of Cambridge academic found herself stuck in a terrible situation after getting locked inside her bathroom for several hours. But with some quick thinking, Dr Krisztina Ilko managed to escape using a few common household items, as reported by the BBC. The ordeal unfolded when Ilko was in her flat, located inside a mediaeval tower within the former residence of 16th-century philosopher Erasmus at Queens’ College, London. As per the viral post by her, the plumber, while working on her shower, unknowingly broke the bathroom door lock and forgot to tell her.
When she went inside, she got trapped in a windowless bathroom with thick walls around her, muting her cries for help. Dr Ilko was trapped for a harrowing seven hours. According to the news portal BBC, the woman refused to succumb to despair, and after brainstorming, she fashioned a makeshift lock pick using an eyeliner pen and Q-Tip to pry the lock open. After seven long hours, she was able to manipulate the lock’s mechanism and let herself out.
Sharing her ordeal on the micro-blogging site X (Formerly Twitter), Krisztina Ilko wrote, “The plumber broke the lock in the bathroom and forgot to tell me. I went in and got locked in. The door is solid wood and wouldn’t break. I was stuck for 7 hours (I thought I would be there for days, as no one could hear). Finally, I handpicked the lock with an eyeliner and an ear pick.”

Krisztina Ilko went on to say that she was trying to remember how long a person can survive on just water and hoping that she wouldn’t die there. She also thought that if people came looking for her, would they check the bathroom, or would she have to wait for Monday.
Recalling the moment, she told the media outlet that she tried to bang the shower head on the door, break it with brute force, and shout for help, but nothing worked and no one could hear her.
“Sometimes when I hear sounds around here, I joke that it is the ghost of Erasmus, and then I thought I was going to join him and become a Cambridge legend. When I eventually got out and the door opened, it was exhilarating because I didn’t think it would work. I expected to be there for five days or longer, but I made it out,” she concluded.
The tweet garnered much attention on social media. Till now, it has pulled in more than 314,000 views and over 4,400 likes.
