A new joinee at a Chinese educational firm was temporarily dismissed from her job after she refused to fulfil her boss’s alleged daily breakfast demands. According to the South China Post, the woman identified by her surname Lou, shared the incident on Xiaohongshu, a Chinese social media app, recalling how her supervisor, named Liu, demanded that she bring her a “hot Americano and an egg” every morning, as well as keep a bottle of water ready.
In her post, Luo said these chores were not part of her job and expressed her frustration online, claiming her supervisor was unfair in demanding personal favours on a daily basis. “I wasn’t hired to be a personal assistant, yet my boss expected me to handle her breakfast needs every morning,” she wrote.
However, when she spoke up in a work chat group about these unfair demands, she was reprimanded and later fired without compensation by the Human Resources department, as per the report.
After the incident came to light, it sparked outrage on social media, with netizens condemning the company and demanding an internal investigation.
Following the widespread criticism online the company decided to reinstate the employee and instead, the supervisor was terminated for making absurd requests from the team members. The company, earlier this month, issued an official statement confirming Liu’s termination due to her inappropriate actions.
Wang, the company’s HR head, while talking to Dafeng News said that Lou’s termination was Liu’s decision and not by company policies. Though she has resumed employment, it is questionable whether she will be compensated.
Incidents related to workplace harassment and bullying are not new. Earlier this year, a female employee of HSBC described her terrible office experience and how the corporation ignored her complaints about the toxic workplace.
In a long post on LinkedIn, the employee recalled an incident where a colleague made an ethnically insensitive remark. She quoted the colleague saying, “EK CHAMAAT MAARENGE, BIHAR PAHUCH JAOGI (I will slap you so hard, you will go back to Bihar).” Despite reporting this to her manager, no action was taken.
Have you ever faced any such incidents at your workplace?
