New Delhi: In what became a major roadblock in implementing the full mobile number portability (MNP), telecom operators have now relieved users from adding '0' or '+91' prefix while dialling any STD mobile number.

Earlier users were required to add either of the two prefixes to connect mobile numbers outside of their home network, but now they no longer need to do so. They can simply dial the 10-digit mobile number.

We have tested this on multiple networks including Airtel and Vodafone and the change appears to be working without hitches.

The new move is a major step towards kicking off the nation-wide MNP service.

While the earlier deadline to roll out full MNP was May 3, but it has been delayed by two months after an extention request from telecom industry body COAI.

COAI had sought extension as telecom operators required to make some technical changes to their networks due to changes in national numbering plan (NNP).

DoT amended NNP asking telecom operators to allow their subscribers to dial on to mobile numbers within the same circle as well as inter circle without any prefix. This, in turn, required operators to put in place certain hardware and software to facilitate the process of full mobile number portability.

Once rolled out, the full MNP will allow subscribers to retain their mobile number in any part of the country even when they change their operator or state. At present, MNP allows subscribers to change mobile network while retaining their number in the same telecom circle.
