OpenAI is finally rolling out the hi-tech ChatGPT 4o voice mode for select users who have signed up for the AI chatbot’s premium subscription. The new ChatGPT 4o (‘o’ stands for omni) promises to give you AI interaction like you have never seen before, except for in movies like Her that showed the power and potential of AI many years back.
However, the company was forced to change the tone of its voice mode as actress Scarlett Johansson decided to file a lawsuit against OpenAI for using a voice eerily similar to hers. The voice is coming to select paid users of ChatGPT and the rest will get it before the end of 2024.
ChatGPT 4o Voice Mode – What It Offers
Voice mode basically lets you experience the AI chatbot in a human-like conversational tone. The launch teaser demo of voice mode showed a range of emotions presented by ChatGPT 4o and the results as well as response time of the AI chatbot got everyone excited. OpenAI has even managed to get ChatGPT 4o singing to each other through separate devices.
“The new voice (and video) mode is the best computer interface I’ve ever used. It feels like AI from the movies; and it’s still a bit surprising to me that it’s real. Getting to human-level response times and expressiveness turns out to be a big change,” Sam Altman, CEO, OpenAI penned his views in a recent post.
The company has also mentioned that the Advanced Voice Mode will work through the latest preset voices – Juniper, Breeze, Cove and Ember that have been made in partnership with paid voice actors. Hardly surprising to see the Sky voice mode missing from the list, which seemingly forced OpenAI to delay the official release of this voice feature from June to July.
ChatGPT Voice Mode Release – How To Get It
OpenAI says the limited release allows the feature to be tested effectively and help them monitor its usage. ChatGPT Plus subscribers in the alpha group will be notified about getting the voice mode update on the ChatGPT app and they will also get an email sharing the details about how to set up the voice mode and use it.
AI tech has faced multiple privacy issues, none more so than the one highlighted by Johansson earlier this year. OpenAI will have to make sure that voice mimics doesn’t ruin the experience of the feature and it delivers a glitch-free output that makes the headlines for the right reasons.
