New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will likely hold a party meet on Saturday. Reportedly, the focus is going to be on sorting out infighting issues within the Trinamool Congress as it gets battle ready for the Panchayat polls.
All district heads of the party are expected to be present for the meeting.
On March 25, Tourism Minister Rachpal Singh's car was attacked and damaged at Kinkarbati Krishi ground, at Haripal in Hooghly district, allegedly by Trinamool Congress supporters. While Singh had a narrow escape after police intervened and escorted him to safety, the issue brought to light the surging infighting among members of the party.
Panchayat polls may be advanced?
The Trinamool Congress on Friday hinted that the Panchayat elections, to be held in May 2013, may be advanced to winter this year, due to the blistering heat the region experiences during summer time.
The Panchayat elections will be regarded as the first trial of strength for the party after Mamata Banerjee took over office in 2011.
The Left controls 13 of the 17 Zilla Parishads and the Trinamool Congress two, South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore. Trinamool Congress insiders feel that delay in Panchayat polls could give an advantage to the Opposition which is trying to tarnish the Mamata Banerjee government.
"For that, it is crucial that we perform well in the Panchayat polls. The schemes and sops announced by the government will help us woo the rural voters," they said.
