UP Chief Secretary sent packing
Election Commission replaces another top official in state; senior most bureaucrat replaced after DGP’s removal.

New Delhi: The Election Commission on Friday removed Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Secretary, the state’s senior most bureaucrat, and replaced him with another official.

N C Bajpai was replaced by Shambhu Nath, an IAS officer of 1970 batch. The Election Commission had on Wednesday removed the state’s top police officer, Director General of Police Bua Singh, and many other government officers.

Bajpai and Singh are considered to be close to the ruling Samajwadi Party. Bajpai reportedly attended a SP meeting in Lucknow recently though the Election Commission frowns up officials who attend political event.

Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami has indicated that more officials will be transferred be voting for the Assembly polls begins on April 7.

Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav has not commented on the transfers.
