TN polls: Left parties slam DMK over corruption
Left parties slammed the ruling DMK on corruption issue and exhorted the people to vote out the party from TN.

Coimbatore: Left parties on Wednesday slammed the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu on corruption issue and exhorted the people to vote out the party to close the "dark chapter" in the state.

Addressing a joint election rally along with AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa for the April 13 assembly polls in Coimbatore, CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat slammed Congress and DMK for continuing with their alliance, describing them as "brothers in corruption."

"By being involved in the biggest corruption scandal since Independence due to its wrong doing, DMK has brought shame to the people of Tamil Nadu and the people should punish it for this," he said in an apparent reference to the 2G spectrum allocation scam in which DMK leader and former Union Telecom Minister A Raja has been jailed for his alleged role.

"Like DMK is involved in massive corruption (2G spectrum allocation scam), Congress and its government in Delhi is partner in scam after scam including CWG and Adarsh Housing Society," he charged.

Karat said people will not wait for the court trial or the verdict on spectrum scam, but would deliver their verdict on April 13 and throw this "corrupt government out."

He asked what DMK, a key constituent of UPA, was doing when fuel prices were hiked seven times and when the Congress-led Centre was adopting measures that were resulting in sky rocketing prices of essential commodities.

Karat also charged DMK's first family with influencing various areas and said that party should rename itself as 'Sontha Kudumba Munnetra Kazhagam' (Own Family Development Party).

"All (opposition) parties are determined to see this dark chapter in the life of Tamil Nadu is over. I am sure this government will be thrown out," he said.

CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan said he had traveled across various places and the "wind was blowing in favour of the AIADMK-led alliance."

"The DMK government has brought Tamil Nadu to a stage where mafia and rowdies are ruling the state," he alleged.

Taking on Congress president Sonia Gandhi for saying that DMK was working for the welfare of the poor, he said this was the "most ridiculous statement."

"The 2G spectrum affair belonging to DMK resulted in huge losses to the nation. Was it for the poor? Obviously, DMK and some corporate houses benefited. This is the extent of corruption in DMK rule," he said.

Recalling the Bofors scandal, Bardhan said that though it was only valued at Rs 64 crore, it had shaken the country then and the Congress government "overthrown."

The CPI leader also charged the ruling DMK with doing little to mitigate the sufferings of the people on issues including price rise.
