Telangana's Grand Alliance Urges Guv to Treat it as Single Party for Govt Formation

A day ahead of counting in Telangana, leaders of the grand alliance called on the Governor, ESL Narsimhan, on Monday requesting that they should be considered first to form the government in case of a majority.

The Congress, Telugu Desam Party, Prof Kodandaram’s Telagnana Jana Samithi and CPI comprise the grand alliance in Telangana.

In the meeting, which was held at the Raj Bhanvan on Monday, it was put out formally that the pre-poll alliance should be considered as a single party. The senior leaders said that the subsequent numerical outcome of the individual parties should be considered together.

“While taking the decision on which party to call to form the government, the Governor has to look at this alliance as a single party and consider our numbers together as a single party,” Gudur Narayana Reddy, a senior Congress leader told News18.

The move is being seen as a sign of precaution to avoid any circumstance, similar to the ones neighbouring states, where the parties winning the majority weren’t given first preference to form a government.

“The protocol was not followed in Goa. Even in Karnataka, although BJP had initial numbers, the post-poll alliance of Opposition was greater. It was followed by a floor test. We do not want any confusion. It is simple – our numbers should be treated as a single party. And, I am confident that we will get majority and if that’s the case we should be called first.” Reddy added.
