New Delhi: Under attack over backtracking on its earlier decision on separate Telangana, the Government may consider setting up a States Reorganisation Commission to go into demands for creation of new states.
Official sources said such a body, that could become the second of its kind after Independence, could go into the entire issue in-depth and give its recommendations.
The move, the sources believe, could take the heat off the sensitive issue in Andhra Pradesh that has now erupted into a huge problem in Telangana region.
During the last fortnight, there were protests in the Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra regions against the December 9 announcement of Home Minister P Chidambaram that steps should be initiated for creation of a separate Telangana state.
One Telangana minister quits, 12 more likely to follow
Under pressure from fellow legislators, one Andhra Pradesh Minister from Telangana region resigned on Thursday while 12 others from the region are likely to follow suit on Friday.
Komatireddy Venkata Reddy, one of the 13 ministers from Telangana, faxed his resignation letter to Chief Minister K Rosaiah late this evening and the remaining 12 are likely to do the same after their meeting with the Chief Minister on Friday, a minister from the region said.
About 10 ministers from Telangana met at the residence of Small Scale Industries Minister D K Aruna late on Thursday night and decided to write a letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi seeking "clarity" on the Centre's latest statement with regard to the creation of Telangana state.
Earlier on Thursday, the Telangana ministers wanted to put in their papers but Chief Minister K Rosaiah prevented them from doing so.
The ministers first met Andhra Pradesh Congress unit President D Srinivas in the morning and said there should have been more clarity in Union Home Minister P Chidambaram's statement on the statehood issue on Wednesday night.
"A clear-cut timeframe should have been fixed for the formation of Telangana state, the ministers said.
Later, they met the Chief Minister in the Secretariat and expressed their desire to put in their papers. However, Rosaiah persuaded them not to take such a step.
State Information Minister J Geeta Reddy and Health Minister Danam Nagender told newsmen after the meeting with Chief Minister that they would go to New Delhi and meet Sonia Gandhi seeking "clarity" on Telangana statehood.
"There is some confusion in the statement Chidambaram made on Wednesday. We want clarity on the consultation process," the ministers said.
