SP vs Cong: SP to field more candidates in Maharashtra
The Congress refused to give the North-West Mumbai seat to the SP.

New Delhi: After failing to arrive at a seat sharing agreement with Congress in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party on Sunday announced that it will field several candidates in Maharashtra after the ruling party "refused" to give it the North-West Mumbai seat.

"The Congress formally informed us this morning that it would not be able to part with the Mumbai North-West seat. With this, I have to announce with a heavy heart that SP will contest the maximum number of seats in Maharashtra," party general secretary Amar Singh told reporters in the Capital.

The SP general secretary also threatened to field 10 candidates in West Bengal if Trinamool Congress chief Mamta Banerjee failed to leave one seat for the party. "However, we will not field a candidate against Mamta Banerjee and (External Affairs Minister) Pranab Mukherjee," he added.

"We had asked the Congress for just one seat to field our Maharashtra unit president Abu Asim. Had they given us one seat we would not have contested other seats as it would only result in division of votes...the Mumbai North-West seat is new and there was no sitting Congress candidate," said Amar Singh.

He said that the Congress will be responsible for the division of votes in Maharashtra. But maintained that the SP would not field any candidate against late Sunil Dutt's daughter Priya Dutt "as long as the Congress fields no candidate against Sanjay Dutt in Lucknow."
