Lucknow: After getting absolute majority in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the Samajwadi Party on Tuesday put on hold the entry of new members into the party to prevent misuse of the party name.
"Party state president and UP chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has asked all the district offices not to take in any new members and also prevent joining in from other parties with immediate effect", party spokesman Rajendra Chowdhury said.
The party president also directed the district offices to deposit the amount collected in a membership campaign run between July 1 to October 31 last year.
The move is said to be an attempt to build a positive image of the party and prevent those wanting to misuse its name from joining the SP.
