Mumbai: The Shiv Sena through its mouthpiece 'Saamna' has come down heavy on Congress President Sonia Gandhi who on Wednesday met Jama Masjid Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari.
An editorial in 'Saamna' on Friday said that the meeting was engineered to garner votes and divide the nation.
Shiv Sena's reactions come after its ally, the BJP approached the Election Commission to take cognisance of Sonia's reported appeal to Muslims that they should not let their votes split in Lok Sabha elections.
The meeting, which took place at Sonia's 10 Janpath residence lasted for 45 minutes, during which Bukhari apprised her of various issues pertaining to the community. Sources close to Bukhari said a decision to support the Congress has been finalised and an official announcement is likely to come on Friday.
Sonia, meanwhile defended the meeting by saying, "We are not in the game or business of polarisation (of votes). Meeting clerics has been a tradition followed by Feroze Gandhi and Indira Gandhi."
