New Delhi: After a low turnout in initial hours due to incessant rains and a minor scuffle between rival political groups, polling in the keenly-fought Punjab Assembly elections picked up around Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Election Commission in Punjab, an estimated 65.1 per cent of the votes were cast.
Deputy Election Commissioner R Bhattacharya was quoted by news agency PTI as saying that the polling was peaceful.
There were reports of an FIR being registered against Punjab Finance Minister and Congress candidate for the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat, Surinder Singla for slapping a presiding officer at a polling booth in Amritsar.
Close to 55 per cent turnout was reported for the high-profile Amritsar bypoll, state Election Commission sources said.
The counting of votes for the 115 assembly seats will be held Feb 27 when the electronic voting machines (EVMs) are decoded.
As many as 1,351 polling booths were established for total electorate of 13,61,195 in the 10 Assembly segments of the district.
The main contest in the Tuesday's polling is between the Congress, led by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and the Akali-BJP alliance, led by former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal.
