Jairam dismissed the allegations by Mayawati that his charges were politically motivated.

New Delhi: Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh has hit out at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati over the alleged misuse of National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) funds in the state.

The Union minister dismissed the allegations by the BSP leader that his charges were politically motivated.

Ramesh said that there were deliberate instances of embezzlement of NREGS funds in Uttar Pradesh.

This comes after Mayawati wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying that the charges put by Ramesh were baseless and did not even have specific allegations about the misuse of the funds.

The BSP chief had further alleged that the letter sent by Ramesh was politically motivated.

Mayawati had, however, pointed that there had been complaints of poor quality of work in two districts, Gonda and Balrampur, adding that investigations were ordered.

In the letter to the prime minister, Mayawati claimed action had already been taken wherever discrepancies were found. She further wrote that investigations had also been ordered and recoveries also made.
