Mulayam Singh Yadav announced that he would contest the forthcoming Assembly elections from two seats.

New Delhi: Amidst a volatile political climate, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav on Friday announced that he would contest the forthcoming Assembly elections from two seats.

''I have been forced to contest the elections from two seats — Gunnaur and Barthana — on demand of the people and a directive from my party,'' PTI quoted him as saying.

''I have to obey the demand of the people and of the party workers,'' he was further quoted. Mulayam is presently a sitting member from Gunnaur Assembly seat in Badaun district.

The Samajwadi Party supremo is slated to file his nominations from Barthana seat in Etawah district on March 20, the last day of filing of the nominations.

The polling for the first phase will be held on April 7. The UP Assembly polls will be held in seven phases.

In all likelihood, the polls will witness a four-cornered contest, with the incumbent Samajwadi Party making a valiant effort to retain power and the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party trying to emerge as the single largest party.

The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress will be the two other main contenders in the race.
