New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is expected to resign on Monday, two days after the announcement of the election results, but will be asked to continue till the formation of the next government, according to official sources.
A prime ministerial aide told IANS that a meeting of the outgoing Cabinet is also scheduled for Monday, after which the Prime Minister is likely to call on President Pratibha Patil and submit his resignation.
The President will host a dinner for the outgoing Cabinet the same day.
"It is by protocol that the Prime Minister of the outgoing government resigns after the poll results," the aide said.
The President then invites the party or alliance with the most number of seats to form the government. The single largest party or coalition needs a simple majority of 272 seats in the 545-member house.
Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee of the BJP had quit on May 13, 2004 when the results of the general elections came.
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance had lost the polls.
