Panaji: Virtually ignoring a proposed seat-sharing arrangement with alliance partner Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) for the Lok Sabha polls, the Congress party in Goa said the NCP was not qualified to stake claim to the north Goa seat.
Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Subhash Shirodkar said: "We are in a better position than them to contest this seat. We have seven MLAs from north Goa, while the NCP has only one."
The NCP has been clamouring for the north Goa Lok Sabha seat.
The Congress has begun implementing its campaign schedule for the state's two Lok Sabha seats.
Shirodkar said that Congress workers would vote for their party alone. "My workers will not vote for any other party in the north Goa elections," he said.
Shirodkar also said he would be travelling to Delhi along with Chief Minister Digambar Kamat to meet the party central leadership to finalise the candidates for both the constituencies.
While former union minister of state for law Ramakant Khalap, former legislator Jeetendra Deshprabhu and former editor Vishnu Wagh are in contention for the north Goa ticket, the state Congress president said that sitting MP Francisco Sardinha, Power Minister Aleixo Sequiera and Valanka, daughter of Congress MLA Churchill Alemao, are the three aspirants for the south Goa ticket.
Goa's two Lok Sabha constituencies go to the polls April 23.
