Bangalore: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Dr G Parameshwar said that efforts are being made to seek the support of the JD(S) and independent MLAs for the Congress candidate in the December-22 election to the State Legislative Council.
Speaking to the media on Sunday, he exuded confidence of the victory of the party nominee Anand Gaddadevaramath who is pitted against CM DV Sadananda Gowda.
"We are in touch with the JD(S) and the six independents to drum up support for the Congress candidate," he said. Referring to grumbling within the ruling BJP, the KPCC president said that it may also help to the Congress ensure defeat of the CM. However, the Congress has not been successful so far in securing the support of the JD(S) which has not fielded any candidate.
In the 225-member Karnataka Legislative Assembly, Congress has 71 members followed by 26 of the JD(S) and six independents including Sriramulu, who are all former ministers.
Sadananda Gowda's continuation as the CM depends on the election, as he has to get elected to either of the two houses of the legislature within six months of his taking charge as the head of the state.
