New Delhi: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and her aide Sasikala skipped court appearance in connection with an income tax return case filed against them by Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy.

The court ordered them to appear before it at the next date of appearing on June 30 and in first week of July without fail. It its oral observation says the judge said Jayalalithaa must adjust her programme so that she can attend court proceedings.

They have both been charged for allegedly not filing returns for the assessment year 1993-94.

The report submitted by Sasikala stated that she was unwell and so could not attend the court proceedings. Jayalalithaa stated that prior plans were the reason for her failure to appear.

However, the prosecution contested the reasons saying these cannot be accepted at all and added that it was disobedience of the Supreme Court. The prosecution from the beginning was asking to post the case within a week for questioning the accused and for framing charges. The case has been long due now.
