New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday wrote to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, saying nothing should be said or done to create undue alarm over Mullaperiyar dam issue.
Singh also asked Water Resources Ministry to speak to Kerala and Tamil Nadu governments to sort out issues.
In an other development, Jayalalitha has written to Kerala CM Oomen Chandy, asking him to abide by Supreme Court recommendations and raise dam height to 142 ft.
"Retrofitted Mullapreiyar is as good as new. Tremor reports and fears are exaggerated and unfoundedm," Jaya said in her letter.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in Kerala Assembly VS Achutanandan has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, seeking immediate intervention in the issue and give permission for new dam.
Earlier, the Tamil Nadu government moved the Supreme Court accusing Kerala government of whipping up 'fear psychosis' on Mullaperiyar row and sought the court's direction, restraining the state from making any controversial
statement on the issue.
In an urgent application to the apex court, Tamil Nadu alleged that Kerala, despite a status quo order by the apex court, was making public statements on issues of pulling down the century-old dam and constructing a new one in its place.
According to Tamil Nadu, the statements emanating from Kerala were 'creating deep rooted animosities' between the people of the two states and posing grave threat to the peace and law and order situation in the two neighbouring states.
While Kerala wants to demolish the dam located in its Idukki district due to the perceived ecological threat and possible collapse of the dam, Tamil Nadu wants the dam to be protected as it caters to the irrigation and drinking water needs of a dozen of its districts.
