New Delhi: A day after Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said that he would be happy to see Sharad Pawar become the Prime Minister, the Nationalist Congress Party supremo made it clear that he was not in the race for the prime minister's post in 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
Shinde had earlier said, "I will be happy if Pawar becomes PM. He has been trying since 1992. But because of Delhi's politics he hasn't been able to do so." However, he later backtracked from his remarks saying that he was misquoted and his first choice for the top post was always Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi.
NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik had also said, "We are grateful for Shinde's comment, our leader has the capibilty to be a good PM. But we are aware of our party's strength, and we want to clarify that Sharad Pawar is not in PM's race."
Reacting to Shinde's remarks on Pawar, Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari had said, "I don't know the context in which Shinde made the statement. As far as Congress goes, we have a 'trimurti' leadership in the party that has made some good decisions and the NCP is our valuable ally."
Meanwhile, Congress's crucial All India Congress Committee (AICC) meeting is scheduled to be held on January 17 where Rahul Gandhi is likely to be anointed as the PM candidate.
