Lucknow: Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav caught the Mulayam Singh camp by surprise by the way he sacked his uncle and Samajwadi Party state unit chief Shivpal Yadav from his Cabinet, sources said Sunday.
A party insider said the news was broken to Mulayam while he and and five senior SP leaders met at his residence to analyse the turmoil in the party.
Five minutes after Shivpal walked in, a person in Mulayam's staff told the leaders that news channels were breaking the news of Shivpal's removal from the state Cabinet. Also Read: Amar Singh is Back Centre Stage; So is Trouble
It came as a shock to everyone in the room, and the five others left Mulayam and Shivpal alone to plan the next step. Shortly afterwards, news broke that Shivpal has expelled his cousin Ram Gopal Yadav from the party for six years, accusing him of conspiring with the BJP.
That the old guard did not expect Akhilesh to escalate things so quickly was evident from the fact that, before the news broke of Shivpal's expulsion from the Cabinet, they were discussing how a compromise could be reached. Also Read: Who Stands With Whom in Samajwadi Party Pariwar
This was the formula: Mulayam leads the party as SP national president; tickets are decided by him in consultation with Akhilesh, Shivpal and Ram Gopal and all Akhilesh supporters excluding Udayveer are reinstated
Mulayam did not agree. The compromise formula did not get a second chance as by then Akhilesh removed Shivpal from the UP ministry, deepening the rift.
