Chandigarh: The Congress is heading for victory in Haryana, but Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda-led Congress has admitted the results on Thursday were below his expectations.
Though the Congress was headed towards a simple majority winning probably 46 seats in the 90-member assembly, the results were a dampener for Hooda and the Congress.
Chief Minister Hooda admitted the results were not to his liking. "Yes, the results are not as per our expectation. But the Congress is going to create history by forming a government in Haryana for the second term. We will examine why we ended up with fewer seats. We have an absolute majority in the assembly," he said.
Despite the less-than-expected performance, Congress supporters thronged Hooda's house in Rohtak town to celebrate.
Hooda's government got the previous assembly dissolved seven months ahead of schedule in August this year to seek early elections after the Congress won nine out of 10 Lok Sabha seats in May.
The main opposition Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), which was decimated in the 2005 assembly battle, led in 26 assembly seats.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) were not even projected to reach double figures.
Over 10 independents, mostly Congress rebels, could also win, officials said.
