Jind: Barely able to walk without support, Jind's sitting MLA Dr Hari Chand Middha from the Indian National Lok Dal arrives in a narrow lane of Jind's Main Bazaar to address a public meeting on Saturday evening as his campaigning for the day nears an end.
As the frail leader sits in front of a small crowd of shopkeepers and traders, his associate Babu does all the talking. He reads out all the sops the MLA plans to dole out if he is voted to power for a second term.
As Babu continues to address the gathering for another 10 minutes, people sitting around describe Dr Middha as "more of a social worker than a politician". "Your government on your footsteps," is the slogan of this former Armyman.
Dr Middha, 67, keeps his address brief as he assures that the INLD will win the elections and its government would begin its development work with Jind, which has been 'neglected' by the current Bhupinder Singh Hooda regime.
He accepts that he has not got much work done in his constituency dominated by the Jats in the past five years. He blames it on the 'ignorant' Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
As he concludes, he targets his opponent Surinder Singh Barwala, a former INLD minister who recently joined the BJP following the 'Modi wave'. "Neither Modi, nor Barwala can suppress me," he confidently says, adding, "those who leave their home are foolish."
