New Delhi: The Election Commission on Tuesday issued notice to union Law Minister Salman Khurshid on a complaint by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that he violated the model code of conduct by announcing 9 per cent sub quota for Muslims if the party was voted to power in Uttar Pradesh.
The Election Commission has asked Khurshid to reply in writing by 5 pm on Thursday.
The BJP complained to the EC that Khurshid had made the announcement at an election rally at Farrukhabad this week and termed the move as unconstitutional.
The Election Commission had earlier on Tuesday issued a notice to Congress candidate and Salman Khurshid's wife Louise Khurshid. She was served the notice by the Election Commission as the law minister was campaigning for her when he promised a 9 per cent sub-quota for backward Muslims in Uttar Pradesh.
Louise Khurshid has been asked by the Election Commission to explain within three days the statements made by her husband.
