Court rejects bail plea of Mamata 'attacker'
Mamata Banerjee has alleged that Gurjant Singh's truck deliberately hit her convoy and tried to kill her.

Kolkata: There is still no reprieve for truck driver Gurjant Singh whose vehicle hit Railway Minister Mamata's Banerjee's convoy on August 9. Gurjant will stay in jail for two more days after the East Midnapore court in Tamluk on Monday remanded him to Judicial Custody till August 25.

Trinamool Congress leadership has alleged that the accident was an attempt on Mamata's life by the Communist Party of India-Marxist. Trinamool MP Suvendu Adhikary had filed a case of attempt to murder against the truck driver.

"The CPM has setup suicide squads to eliminate me and other leaders of Trinamool before Assembly elections," Mamata had said after the accident.

The case was given to the CID and Gurjant Singh has been in police custody since.

But the mechanical analysis of the truck indicated that a brake failure led to the accident. The preliminary report submitted to the government by West Bengal CID on Saturday said 'a mechanical failure' seemed to be the reason behind a truck hitting a car in the convoy of the Trinamool Congress chief.

MLAs from Punjab, the truck driver's home state, have appealed to the West Bengal government and Mamata for justice.

Singh's villagers have also demanded that West Bengal Police should come to Sangrur to complete investigations and determine if he is guilty. They say unless the police has conclusive evidence of him trying to kill Mamata, he should be immediately let off.
