Chiranjeevi has decided to oppose the division of the Andhra state.

Hyderabad: Praja Rajyam Party (RPP) of actor-turned-politician K Chiranjeevi is heading for a split, with the party doing a volte-face on the issue of separate statehood to Telangana region.

With Chiranjeevi deciding to go back on his commitment for separate Telangana state, his party leaders in Telangana region have staged a revolt.

Chiranjeevi, who hails from coastal Andhra and represent Tirupati Assembly constituency in Rayalaseema, met party legislators late on Tuesday night. Party sources said he had decided to oppose the division of the state. A formal announcement is likely later in the day.

The party is facing a revolt from leaders in Telangana region.

Presidents of the party's three district units in the region announced their resignation on Wednesday. A Maheswar Reddy, one of the two legislators of the party in the region, has threatened to quit.

Fourteen of PRP's 18 members of the assembly have already submitted their resignation to the speaker to protest the central government's decision to initiate the process for formation of a separate Telangana state.

Chiranjeevi has not resigned, saying he represent people of all the three regions.

After a three-decade long film career, Chiranjeevi launched PRP last year but failed to make any big impact in the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

It won 18 seats in the 294-member assembly and drew a blank in the Lok Sabha election.
