An old video of Afsar Ali Khan, who is purportedly “additional security” for former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh, boasting about his connection to West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, has resurfaced on social media, sparking controversy.
Ghosh had stepped down as RG Kar’s principal earlier this month amid scrutiny following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the state-run hospital in Kolkata. Additionally, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Wednesday suspended Ghosh’s membership, who served as the vice president of the IMA’s Kolkata branch.
The viral footage, reportedly from about a year ago, shows Khan making claims about his connection to West Bengal Chief Minister, referred to as “CM Didi,” while interacting with officials at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
In the video, Khan, engaged in a confrontational exchange with Dr. Manas Kumar Bandyopadhyay, the then-principal of the medical college, and other hospital staff, insists that he is part of “additional security.” When questioned about his irregular attendance, lack of uniform, and origins, he responds by claiming he was sent by “CM Didi,” referring to Mamata Banerjee.
Bandyopadhyay was recently reappointed as RG Kar’s principal following Ghosh’s departure.
In response to the viral video, the BJP has accused Khan—whom they label as Sandip Ghosh’s enforcer from Belgachia—of flaunting a Rs 40 lakh luxury car and benefiting from syndicate-related corruption.
“Afsar Ali Khan, Sandip Ghosh’s enforcer from Belgachia, has built an empire off syndicate cash, now flaunting a ₹40 lakh car at R.G. Kar Hospital,” the BJP unit in West Bengal alleged, along with sharing the video on X.

They also claim that Khan’s presence in the Deputy Superintendent’s office and his interactions with the principal reveal systemic corruption and unchecked power.
“This is the ugly face of syndicate-fueled corruption—pockets lined, power unchecked, and the system rotting from within. How long will these syndicate kingpins keep hijacking our institutions?,” the party stated.
BJP IT Head Amit Malviya has further amplified the issue on X, questioning the nature of Mamata Banerjee’s involvement with RG Kar Medical College & Hospital and suggesting that the Chief Minister might be aware of or involved in the alleged corruption.
“This is a momentous occasion in Bengal’s contemporary political history, where every move of the Chief Minister is raising several questions on her own involvement, in what seems like a cess pool of crime and corruption,” Malviya wrote.

Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh has called for clarity on the video’s authenticity.
pic.twitter.com/XdhTWpWF6F— Kunal Ghosh (@KunalGhoshAgain) August 30, 2024
“If it’s real, it’s dangerous. The Chief Minister is unaware that many people are damaging the government, the party, and his reputation by acting with such arrogance, swagger, and rudeness in his name. If this is true, the police should take action and find out where this courage comes from. They should take appropriate measures,” Ghosh said.
