In Bihar criminals-turned-politicians are among those contesting polls.

Patna: Nearly 500 cases of violation of the model code of conduct have already been reported in Bihar in the run up to the April-May general elections, officials said on Thursday.

Kumar Anshumali, additional chief electoral officer, said till Wednesday 459 cases of violation had been reported while some more came in Thursday morning.

"So far 413 FIRs (first infomation reports) have been lodged. Of these, 313 pertain to defacement of property, 40 for misuse of vehicles, 17 for violation of loudspeaker rules and 21 for holding meetings without valid permission," he said.

In Bihar, high profile candidates and criminals-turned-politicians are among those contesting the elections.

Sources at the election office said cases of the model code of conduct violation had been filed against Railway Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad and central Minister of State for Home Shakil Ahmed.

Besides, cases have been filed against dozens of MPs and legislators who are contesting the polls.
