Berhampur: At least ten persons were injured in a clash between supporters of ruling BJD and opposition Congress at Gopalpur in Odisha's Ganjam district after declaration of urban local bodies polls, triggering tension in the area, police said on Sunday.

Armed police force in strength was deployed in the sea-side town and senior police officers were camping there following the violence that took place on Saturday. "The situation is under control and a peace committee meeting is being conveyed to restore peace in the town," said Berhampur Superintendent of Police Anirudha Singh adding no arrest made in this connection.

Trouble erupted after results of local 11-ward Notified Area Council (NAC) were declared on Friday and ruling BJD won eight seats. However, the situation turned ugly on Saturday as the supporters the two parties came face to face and fought a pitched battle pelting stones at each other and using sticks, police said.

In the last civic body election in 2008, the BJD had won in 10 out of 11-wards. In another post-poll violence at Buguda NAC in the district, a woman was injured when supporters of rival group attacked her. The injured person was shifted to MKCG Medical College Hospital in Berhampur. Police had registered a case, but no one was arrested, police said.
