'Thank God We Have a Virat Kohli': Sanjay Manjrekar Praises Superstar for Proving He's India's Best Test Batter
On tough bouncy pitches in South Africa, Virat Kohli showed his class and even though he scored just one fifty, looked the most comfortable batter from India.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, the two ageing stars of Indian cricket might be nearing the end of their respective international careers but there’s little evidence to show their apt replacements have been found in Tests. The next generation has shown glimpses but is still far from a finished product.

The South Africa tour saw Kohli yet again proving he remains the best Test Indian batter currently and will continue to be part of their setup at least in the two longer formats for some time to come.

He may have scored one half-century on the challenging bouncy pitches in South Africa but was the most comfortable of the visiting batters on show. And former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar reckons that the team should be thankful that they have someone of Kohli’s class.

“Virat Kohli will no doubt play (Test cricket) as long as possible and thank god for India, we have a Virat Kohli. He showed on this trip the kind of the challenges that batters face that there’s a big distance between him and the next best Test batter in India at least until Rishabh Pant is back,” Manjrekar said on ESPNcricinfo.

On the question of Rohit’s future, Manjrekar said it’s up to the great man himself to decide the duration of his remaining career but added there’s no competition for his replacement though.

“Rohit Sharma will be the man to let us know by his action on how much he wants to play Test cricket. These (Rohit and Kohli) are still batters from the old school. All the new guys will have to adapt to Test cricket. If Rohit Sharma wants to extend his Test career, it’s in his hands, there’s no competition,” Manjrekar said.

The Indian Test team will next take on England in a five-match series starting later in January.
