School Holidays in October 2023: Educational Institutes to Remain Closed for Dussehra Break
The time frame of the Dussehra holidays might vary depending on the part of the country and the academic calendar of each educational institution

For students all around the country, October is a month full of festivals and celebration that serves as an enjoyable break from school. During this season, important festivities like Durga Puja and Dussehra take centre stage. As a result, schools across the country will be closed for around seven days this month, giving students a short yet much-needed vacation. These school holidays are meticulously synced with the academic calendar, allowing students and staff to fully engage themselves in the enthusiastic spirit of these festivals.

As the holidays of Dussehra and Durga Puja draw near, students look forward to the approaching celebrations and a few days off from their academic commitments.

DUSSEHRA– October 24

Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami in the southern part of the country, is the day that marks the end of the nine-day Navratri celebration. The festivities commemorate the triumph of good over evil. On this day, Lord Ram is said to have conquered Ravana, the ruler of Lanka.

India will celebrate Dussehra on October 24 in 2023, and all schools, colleges, and educational institutions will be closed on that day. However, it’s crucial to note that the length of the holiday varies by state, with some states taking a seven-day break from October 19 to 24 to celebrate Dussehra. Schools in West Bengal remain closed during this time to celebrate Durga Puja.

Mahanavami and Vijayadashami, which fall on 23 October and 24 this year are the only two days that most Indian state schools observe Dussehra holidays. Likewise, on these two days, students in Kerala and Tamil Nadu get holidays as they keep their books for pooja, seeking blessings for their academic success.

It is important to note that the time frame of these festive holidays might vary depending on the part of the country and the academic calendar of each educational institution. Furthermore, different regions of India have distinct holiday schedules for their students. As a result, students and parents should contact their respective school administrations in order to gather accurate information about the number of holidays observed by their schools. All Indian schools observe national holidays in unison, but they also observe several state-specific common holidays as directed by the state government.
